Water Watch Program

Our Water Watch officers patrol residential and commercial neighborhoods to look for watering violators during day and nighttime hours. They take photographs of each violation and leave door hangers warning the violator about the importance of complying with the water conservation ordinance. A certified letter is also mailed listing the violation information. Repeat violators are subject to fines of up to $500.

Water Watch patrollers also instruct Orange County residents about how to properly operate their irrigation controller and how to reset it if necessary. They notify residents of any broken sprinkler heads or other wasteful watering that may be occurring, such as a geyser or misdirected sprinkler heads spraying on paved surfaces. They complete free irrigation audits to determine the efficiency of the irrigation system to help the resident who has received a violation notice to conserve water.

  • Never water your lawn or landscaping between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. During this time, most of the water is lost to evaporation.
  • Use low-flow showerheads.
  • Don’t use running water to defrost food.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
